Organization Mission

As an arts education professional and advocate, my mission is to create access to and engagement in arts education to every child and youth. I am particularly focused in creating connections between the arts and other academic and professional disciplines. I help schools, districts, states, and national organizations develop and grow both arts and STEAM education programs.

Areas of Expertise

  • STEAM Education- I have worked with several school districts, the Congressional STEAM Caucus, the Innovation Collaborative, the National Art Education Association, the Arts Education Partnership, and many other organizations to develop STEAM programming and as an invited speaker or expert on STEAM.
  • Media Arts- I have helped the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards develop and improve their Model Cornerstone Assessments, given multiple presentations and webinars on Media Arts in k-12 education for the National Arts Education Association and several universities, and helped to integrate media arts into the Virginia Visual Arts Standards of Learning.
  • K-12 Public Schools Arts Education Administration- I have served as a central office administrator overseeing arts education in four school districts in Virginia, where I developed numerous programs, built local and state-wide partnerships, and designed curriculum. I have been a leader working across the state of Virginia and with colleagues across the nation. I have led the 2020 revision of the Virginia Visual Arts Standards of Learning and collaborated with the leaders of the teams that revised the Dance, Music, and Theatre standards.

Current Top Priorities for Guidance or Collaboration

Contact us to learn more about these current priority areas or to explore collaboration opportunities.
  • I would like to help guide members in building STEAM Education programs in formal and informal education settings. In particular, I would like to help them grow STEAM ecosystems through local and national partnerships, advocate for their state and school districts to develop comprehensive STEAM programs, and create project-based STEAM curriculums.
  • I am also interested in collaborating with other members to grow support for arts education administrators. I have done some of this work previously with the National Arts Education Association, but had to take a leave of absence for two years for family reasons.
  • Finding ways to continue building equity and inclusive policies for art education, especially given the current political climate.

Title: 2280 Pasos Bajo un Cielo Nublado | Artist: Hernán Jourdan | Medium: Film

When I was asked to create a work of art exploring literacy, I wanted to create a dance but I had no dancers or a studio, so I chose to use my own body in the space I had, my yard. Fluent Nature is video of micro-choreography that explores what cannot be expressed with words, how nature has its own language, and how placing the human body in nature changes the story.

Title: What Is Me and What Is Not Me | Artist: Alex Chadwell | Medium: Music

My thinking on arts and literacy centers around the concept of literacies and artmaking as both sense-making and meaning-making processes that organically and inevitably overlap, intersect, and reciprocate. Compositionally, What is me and what is not me is a sound collage of sorts (there is no notation for the piece, and I'd be hard pressed to recreate it accurately) that abstractly and aurally represents the relationships between literacies and artmaking.

Title: A Curious Honeybee | Artist: Gideon Young | Medium: Film

Offering welcome through traditional and digital elements of literacy, A Curious Honeybee provides an experiential learning environment by activating visual, musical, natural, and emotional literacies.

Title: Tercera Llamada | Artist: Karilú Forshee | Medium: Audio

La Carpa Theatre is a project that I am currently directing in the Detroit Latinx community. The project aims to strengthen and uplift youth voices through devised theatre, in the style of the Mexican Carpas. This audio was created in the theatrical environment envisioned for our project. The ways in which literacies are re-defined are at the heart of La Carpa Theatre's mission.
