To Create a MediaWiki Account
- On the upper right corner of your screen, click on the button that says "Log In/Create Account".
- On the next page, click on the button to "Create One". Fill out the subsequent form. There are MediaWiki guidelines on this page as well.
- After you create your account, you should receive an activation e-mail. Click on or enter the hyperlink in to the URL field to activate your account.
- You will now be set up to contribute to MediaWiki.
Some of the advantages of creating a MediaWiki account to make your edits in the Arts Education Partnership wiki include:
- Identified authorship of a particular idea or question;
- The ability to track your own changes as well as changes to pages of interest to you;
- The ability to create new pages;
Creating an account will allow the Arts Education Partnership to gauge interest of those within the arts education field on specific topics or projects.
To Create a New Page
You must be a registered user to create new pages. See below in "Basic Editing Syntax" and follow the instructions for creating an internal link.
To create an internal link (within this wiki):
- Place and on either side of the page name for the link. For example, if you type Name of Page into the text editing box, your result will be Name of Page.
To Contribute or Edit a Page
Now how to edit a wiki is not completely obvious. You will be supplied with a text box to contribute thoughts. It will have a toolbar that will supply you the tools that you would need to edit a page. However the wiki syntax may not be something that you are familiar with. I have included the commands that you will most likely use while using this wiki as well as some resources that will be helpful to your understanding of wiki editing.
Tips for Editing a Wiki Page
You should "Show preview" before saving the changes to a page. This will ensure that the information you have added is in your intended format.
If you do not feel comfortable using wiki editing syntax while making your contributions, feel free not to use it. Particularly for URL addresses, if you would like to share this kind of information, you may contribute the address itself without the syntax. Viewers may copy and paste it into their own browsers manually or another person more comfortable with this language can apply this at another time.
Basic Editing Syntax
To create italic text:
- Place on either side of the text you would like italicized. For example, if you type italic into the text editing box, your result will be italic.
To create bold text:
- Place on either side of the text you would like italicized. For example, if you type bold into the text editing box, your result will be bold.
To create an internal link (within this wiki):
- Place and on either side of the page name for the link. For example, if you type Name of Page into the text editing box, your result will be Name of Page.
- This command will create a new page with the page name as its title if such a page does not exist or will link to the already existing page.
To create an external link:
- Place [ and ] on either side of the URL address.
- You may add the text you would like to display for the page following the URL address to create the following. For example, Arts Education Partnership would be displayed as Arts Education Partnership.
- If there is no text to be displayed, this is the result. Therefore, will be displayed as [1].
Please note the difference between internal and external links. Internal links are to connect pages within this wiki. External links are to connect unrelated pages to the wiki. A good rule of thumb is if the URL begins with "http://www.aep-arts.org/wiki/", that will indicate the URL as an internal link. Do not use the commands for external links to reference internal links. This will actually create more work for you and are more prone to error.
To create a bulleted list:
- Place * prior to each bulleted point.
- Place ** prior to each sub-bulleted point.
- For example,
- * One
- ** Two
- is equivalent to
- One
- Two
- One
To create a numbered list:
- Place # prior to each bulleted point.
- Place ## prior to each sub-bulleted point.
- For example,
- # One
- ## Two
- is equivalent to
- One
- Two
- One
