The Coming Up Taller Awards Program Seeks Nominations
At the Coming Up Taller awards ceremony held at the White House earlier this month, Mrs. Michelle Obama captured the spirit of the Coming Up Taller Award when she said that achievement in the arts and humanities is “a bridge to achievement in life.”
The President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities (PCAH) is inviting nominations for the 2010 Coming Up Taller Awards. In partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), we are embarking on the thirteenth year of the Coming Up Taller Awards, which recognizes the accomplishments of exceptional arts and humanities after-school and out-of-school programs. Coming Up Taller finalists receive a $10,000 award, an award plaque, and an invitation to attend the Coming Up Taller Leadership Enhancement Conference in Washington, DC. In addition, the Coming Up Taller awards ceremony is traditionally held in the Fall at the White House, with the awards bestowed by the President’s Committee’s Honorary Chairman, First Lady Michelle Obama.

Call for Proposals: Session Discussion for National Arts & Education Forum
The Southeast Center for Education in the Arts is seeking proposals for their third national Arts & Education Forum: Arts @ The Core Of 21st Century Learning, which will be held in Chattanooga, TN on May 14-15, 2010.
The Forum will be a dynamic venue for discussing education in the 21st Century and how artistic concepts and processes can be illuminated and propagated for more creative and meaningful instruction throughout the curriculum. Rather than traditionally featuring only a few keynote presenters, SCEA wants to involve as many participants as possible in providing information, sharing ideas, voicing opinions, and demonstrating examples to stimulate thinking and conversations. Proposal options include fishbowl discussions, creative process demonstrations, interviews, sharing student work, videoconferencing, and original “what if” sessions.
If you have questions call Kim Wheetley at 423-425-5205 or email kim-wheetley@utc.edu. To learn more about the Forum and download a proposal form go to: http://www.utc.edu/Outreach/SCEA/2010-Forum.php.

The Kennedy Center: “Arts Integration Schools: What, Why, and How” Conference
The Kennedy Center will host a national conference: Arts Integration Schools: What, Why, and How in Washington, DC. The conference will share a decade of the Kennedy Center’s experience in 20 Washington, D.C. area schools aimed at building a school-wide philosophy for and practice of arts integration. The program, Changing Education Through the Arts (CETA), is a school reform effort realized through ongoing, in-depth professional learning for teachers. Attend April 7-8, 2010 to learn about the what and why of arts integration from the Kennedy Center’s perspective. The conference begins with an overview of the CETA program and the sharing of program evaluation results. Learn about the Kennedy Center’s definition of arts integration and participate in one of three workshops that integrate drama or dance with other subject areas. Then visit a CETA school to observe teachers integrating the arts with other subject areas, tour the school, and speak with the principal and teachers about their leadership roles. For schools interested in beginning the strategic planning process for developing an arts integration school, school teams can apply to participate in the 4-day intensive conference (April 7-10, 2010). Please visit http://www.kennedy-center.org/education/ceta/conference.html to learn more about registering for the conference (April 7-8 or 7-10). The registration deadline is February 1, 2010. For further information, please contact Amy Duma at alduma@kennedy-center.org or (202)416-8842.
