Arts in Education Week Website
AEP has created a hub site for sharing information about National Arts
in Education Week. The site can be accessed by clicking the button
below or by visiting http://aep-arts.org/artsineducationweek.html.
On the site, we’ve listed links to partner sites that are also planning
activities or providing information about the week. We’ve also
suggested some activities around finding out about arts education policy
and practice in states and communities, and we hope to get some
feedback. Until the next Arts Education State Policy Survey and
FRSS (Fast Response Survey System) survey are completed, we’ll have
mostly anecdotal data, but we’re curious to hear from the field.
Information is power!
We welcome you to send us links and information about activities in your
organization or community related to National Arts in Education
Week. Please also feel free to download the logo below for use on
your website. We ask only that you link it back to the AEP hub
site at www.aep-arts.org/artsineducationweek.htm
and mention the site in some accompanying text, so that it can continue
to grow as a resource of information about National Arts in Education
Week.

NEA Proposes Strategic Plan Framework for 2012-2016
The National Endowment for the Arts’ proposed Strategic
Plan Framework represents the cumulative efforts of NEA leadership,
staff and stakeholders to frame the agency’s direction during fiscal
years 2012 through 2016. The agency developed mission and vision
statements as well as four actionable goals with outcomes, strategies,
and performance measures that will inform and guide its future
grant-making and administrative activities.
The NEA is contemplating conducting an evaluation of its arts education
initiatives in 2011 and 2012. This evaluation would identify the
agency’s future priorities for supporting lifelong learning in the arts
and would yield a framework for understanding and leveraging
relationships and strategic partnerships with entities that support arts
education.
A background document about the Strategic Plan Framework, which provides
a summary of goals and principal strategies, can be accessed here.
The NEA plans to formally adopt the Strategic Plan Framework
after it considers the comments received during the Framework’s recent
public feedback period.

Urban Gateways Awarded Motorola Foundation Grant for
Female-focused Gaming Program
Chicago's Urban Gateways
has received more than $30,000 as part of the Innovation Generation
grant program from the Motorola Foundation. Through the grant, Urban
Gateways will launch the program Girls Got Game, in which 125
female middle school students in the Chicago area will design and build a
fully-operational PC- based computer game.
The Motorola Foundation’s signature Innovation Generation program seeks
to boost American students’ engagement in science, technology,
engineering and math (STEM) by providing $7.5 million to K-12 programs
across the U.S.
Through the Girls Got Game program, participants will initiate
and construct all components of a video game including design, character
development, theme, layout, and sound production. The program will also
introduce female students to career possibilities within the gaming
industry, which is experiencing tremendous growth. Currently women make
up 38% of all gamers but represent only 12% of the gaming industry.
