Statement from U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan on the NAEP Arts 2008 Assessment:
"These results are important for several reasons. First, they remind us that the arts are a core academic subject and part of a complete education for all students. The arts are also important to American students gaining the 21st century skills they will need to succeed in higher education and the global marketplace – skills that increasingly demand creativity, perseverance, and problem solving combined with performing well as part of a team.
The results also remind us that learning in the arts can and should be rigorous and based on high standards, and that it can be evaluated objectively, using well-designed measures.
This Arts Report Card should challenge all of us to make K-12 arts programs more available to America’s children and youth. Such programs not only engage students’ creativity and academic commitment today, but they uniquely equip them for future success and fulfillment. We can and should do better for America’s students."

EdTA Honors Three Administrators With National Award
The Educational Theatre Association (EdTA) and its student honorary division, the International Thespian Society (ITS), have named the recipients of the 2009 Administrator’s Award. The award is presented to outstanding school administrators who demonstrate exemplary support for educational theatre.
The recipients are:
“A school administrator’s support for a program makes all the difference in its chances for success,” says EdTA Executive Director Michael J. Peitz. “Administrators who believe in the importance of a theatre program to the whole of a curriculum fight for the things that the program and its educators need to serve the best interests of their students. They do this because they understand the tremendous payoff that a vibrant theatre program brings to the students in their educational journey and to the school. We are proud to honor these three administrators with national recognition for all that they have done to promote the programs in their schools.”

Call for Chapter Proposals - 20UNDER40: Re-Inventing the Arts and Arts Education for the 21st Century
Chapter Proposals Deadline: August 31, 2009
20UNDER40—a new anthology of critical discourse—endeavors to collect twenty essays about the future of the arts and arts education, each written by an emerging leader under the age of forty. In doing so, this collection of essays will provide a unique arena for new ideas by formally gathering the thoughts of young artists, teaching artists, administrators, researchers, and other arts and arts education professionals—legitimizing the talent of young leaders by bringing their ideas out of the margins and into the forefront of our dialogue.
The intention of this anthology is to be as inclusive as possible concerning forward-thinking theories, visions, and models for 21st Century arts and arts education. Successful chapter proposals will identify a problem within the field and pose a solution; highlight a need and articulate a new vision, and/or; debunk an accepted theory or practice and posit a new one.
