U. S. Department of Education Releases “First Look” Report on Arts Education

The National Center on Education Statistics (NCES), in partnership with the Office of Innovation and Improvement, completed the first survey in 10 years of the conditions of K-12 arts education. Both principals and teachers – arts specialists as well as elementary classroom teachers – were surveyed during the 2009-2010 school year. The May 2 Web-only “First Look” release contains selected findings on such indicators as percentages of schools that offer instruction in four arts disciplines, but only where the data describe conditions nationally. Additional variables such as poverty levels of schools and regions of the country will be reflected in the comprehensive report to be released later this year.

New Report from the NEA Measures the Value of the Performing Arts and Other Arts Sectors

The National Endowment for the Arts has released a new study titled Time and Money: Using Federal Data to Measure the Value of Performing Arts Activities, which looks at the value of the arts in three ways: time spent on arts activities; organizational revenue and expenses; and direct consumer spending.  A particular focus on performing arts data provides consistency across these three measurements.

The report draws on the most recent data available from the U.S. Economic Census, the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), to arrive at monetary and non-monetary value measurements of the nation’s performing arts sector.  Recent data show that performing arts organizations generated nearly $13.6 billion in revenues; Americans spent $14.5 billion on performing arts admissions, and on any given day, 1.5 million Americans attended arts performances, usually with family or friends.

For the full press release and a summary of key findings from the report, visit the NEA’s website.

Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP) Study Shows Majority of Arts Graduates Find Satisfying Work

Findings from a national survey released last week show that, contrary to widespread belief, most arts graduates are employed and holding jobs consistent with their educational goals. For example, 92% of those who wish to work currently are, with most finding employment soon after graduating. Two-thirds said their first job was a close match for the kind of work they wanted. And almost three-quarters (74%) of those who intended to work as a professional artist had done so at some point since graduating.

The findings of the Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP) are based on information from 13,581 alumni of 154 arts high schools, arts colleges and conservatories, and arts schools and departments within universities. Those responding to the fall 2010 survey graduated from fine arts, theater, dance, music, creative writing, media arts, film, design and architecture programs. The results provide insights into the lives and careers of arts graduates. To learn more about SNAAP and its national report, click here.
