Arts Ed Instructional Requirement - Elementary

Curriculum Required: The board of education of each city shall prescribe a curriculum for all schools under their control. In any such curriculum there shall be included the study of the following subjects: (7) the fine arts, including music. (Ohio Rev. Code Ann. § 3313.60)

Arts Requirements for High School Graduation Each student shall complete two semesters or the equivalent of fine arts in grades seven to twelve to graduate from high school pursuant to division (K) of section 3313.603 of the Revised Code. (Ohio Admin. Code 3301:35-04)

Arts Ed Assessment Requirements

School District Curriculum and Instruction: A course of study shall be adopted for each subject taught. Each course of study [including fine arts] shall (v) provide a way to assess student progress and the need for intervention; and (viii) be guided by Ohios state-adopted model curriculum programs, or other curricular models, and objectives assessed by the state proficiency tests. Districts shall provide for an assessment system that aligns with their courses of study and includes: (1) regular assessment of student performance; and (2) guidelines for using assessment results for instruction, evaluation, intervention, guidance, and grade-promotion decisions. (Ohio Admin. Code 3301:35-04 (A)(1 and 5) and (G))

Licensure Requirements for Non-Arts Teachers Middle Childhood License (Grades 4-9): The middle childhood teacher preparation program shall include preparation in the humanities (including the arts) and areas of concentration in at least two of the following: reading and language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. (Ohio Admin. Code 3301:24-05)
Licensure Requirements for Arts Teachers

Multi-Age Licenses (PreK-12): Preparation in the teaching field shall constitute at least an academic major or its equivalent with sufficient advanced coursework in all areas to be taught as specified by the teacher preparation institution and approved by the Ohio department of education. A minimum of three semester hours in the teaching of reading in the content area shall be required for the professional multi-age license. Licenses shall be available in the following teaching fields: dance, drama/theatre, music and visual art. (Ohio Admin. Code 3301:24-05)
